abstract  objective to study outcome of arthroscopic treatment forosteochondral lesions of the talus, and analysis the outcome preditors. method clinical data of 48 patientswith osteochondral lesions of the talus who underwent ankle arthroscopy were studied.arthroscopic debridement was performed for all patients, microfracture wasperformed in 36 cases additionally. a visual analog scale (vas) for pain, andthe american orthopaedic foot ? ankle society (aofas) ankle and hindfoot scoringsystem were obtained before and after operation. result 43 patients were followed up for an average of 23.9 months.the average post-operative ankle-hindfoot score of aofas was 90.16±9.96,compared with 70.81±6.96 before operation(t＝9.353, p<0.001). the vas score of pain afteroperation (2.51±2.45) was significantly lower than that in pre-operation group (6.95±1.40)(t=8.647, p<0.001). of the 43 patients, 38(81.4%) had good to excellentresults. there was no difference in outcome between the medial and lateralgroup (z=0.205, p=0.838), while the lesions smaller than 10 mm had a better result compared to larger lesions (z=2.19,p=0.28). statistical analysis also revealed that location of the lesion, age ofthe patients, and athletic profession did not affect outcome. conclusion arthroscopic treatment iseffective and safe for osteochondral lesions of the talus, for lesions smallerthan 10mm, excellent resultswere obtained. in addition, locationof the lesion, age of the patients, and athletic profession negatively affectoutcome.
